When our clients bought a modern new construction spec home in South Tampa, they loved the bones of the house but wanted more room to live outside. The original patio felt like an afterthought. So we extended the roofline off the back of the home and built a true backyard covered patio designed for entertaining, cooking, and relaxing in the Florida sun.

This project has become one of our favorite examples of what a backyard covered patio can do for a home. It later served as the backdrop for a professional video and photo shoot featuring a private chef and a full dinner party, showing exactly how the space works in real life.

The Vision for the Backyard Covered Patio

The homeowners wanted the new outdoor space to feel like an uninterrupted extension of the home rather than a separate structure bolted onto the back. Nick Miller Design created the initial rendering for the space, and architect Gary Badders of Shoreline Design Group brought the vision into a buildable plan. From there, our outdoor living team at Lindross Remodeling took over construction, extending the roofline to create a fully covered patio with room for lounging, dining, and cooking.

Covered Backyard Patio with Outdoor Kitchen and Appliances

No backyard covered patio is complete without a great cooking setup. This one includes a Twin Eagles grill and a Big Green Egg, giving the homeowners options for everything from quick weeknight dinners to slow-smoked weekend meals. The layout puts the cook right in the middle of the action, facing the seating and dining areas so nobody misses out on the conversation.

Ceiling, Fireplace, and Finishes

The wood ceiling is one of the standout features of this space. Synergy Wood Products supplied the tongue and groove wood used to line the covered patio ceiling, adding warmth against the home's clean, modern exterior. A Napoleon fireplace anchors one end of the patio, giving the space a cozy focal point even on cooler Tampa evenings. The exterior walls were finished with Dryvit, keeping the look consistent with the rest of the home's modern facade.

Flooring and Countertop Materials

Underfoot, Stone Mart travertine ties the whole patio together with a natural, textured look that holds up well outdoors. The outdoor kitchen counters use granite from Mont Krest, chosen for both durability and style. Together, these materials give the space a polished, high-end feel without losing the relaxed backyard covered patio atmosphere the homeowners wanted.

Bringing the Space to Life

Once construction wrapped, we partnered on a photo and video shoot to capture the patio in action. A private chef prepared a full dinner party menu, and the shoot showed the space exactly as it was designed to be used: friends gathered around the table, the grill and Big Green Egg working, and the fireplace glowing as the sun went down. It is one thing to see a backyard covered patio finished and empty. It is another to see it full of people, food, and life.
